#vtluug on irc.oftc.net is the LUUG IRC channel. Beginning in 2008, some folks began to idle on irc.freenode.net in #vtluug. In fall 2009, there were generally a dozen LUUG members, alumni and associates on at any given time.

On February 28, 2012, the approximately 30 members in the channel made the decision to migrate to irc.oftc.net due to persistent stability issues with Freenode and some issues that some members had with the staff.

If you have a question, please stick around for a while after asking it; just because no one can help you now does not mean that no one will be able to help you later. Also look at ESR's how to ask questions the smart way.

Rules

Rules on this list should always be enforced. Ops will warn users before taking other action, which may include mutes, kicks, and (for more serious offenses) bans. Bans will vary in length depending on the severity of the offense. In the event an op is not in the channel to witness a rule violation, a warning or other action may be given after the fact.

  1. Use common sense, treat others as you wish to be treated, and do not cause a disruption in the channel; all racist slurs, sexist remarks, and name calling are prohibited.
  2. #vtluug is for newcomers and experts alike. Please be helpful and friendly to everyone or don't say anything at all.
  3. Do not change your nick to indicate that you are away.
  4. Do not flood the channel; if your message is more than ~3 lines when posting logs or code, please use a pastebin such as linxb.in.
  5. In the unlikely event that you are banned, do not attempt to evade your ban. Ban evasion will be dealt with strictly and will result in extension of your ban.

Guidelines

This is a list of suggested behaviors to support the mission of VTLUUG that will be enforced at operators' discretion in the event the channel becomes too much of a problem.

The goals of VTLUUG are (from most to least important):

  1. Linux and Unix discussion
  2. General computing, ECE, CS, programming, etc. discussion
  3. Social
