[http://www.jibble.org/piespy/ PieSpy] is a bot that infers social connections in IRC channels. It regularly produces a graph of how it interprets the #vtluug social network. The lastest version is always available [http://vtluug.org/files/2012/piespy/vtluug/vtluug-current.png here]. You can also see the historical progression of the social network by checking out the different versions of the graph available [http://vtluug.org/files/2012/piespy/vtluug/ here]. Additionally, an animation of recent changes of the graph can be found [http://vtluug.org/files/2012/piespy/vtluug/animated.gif here].

IRC etiquette

#vtluug on irc.oftc.net is the LUUG IRC channel. It is a public, relatively unmoderated forum for general banter, especially focusing on VTLUUG operations. If you have questions about this wiki, any even we're having, or general *nix, it is the best place to ask them.

If you ask a question, please stick around for a while (several hours) after asking; just because no one can help you now does not mean that no one will be able to help you later. Also look at ESR's how to ask questions the smart way; it will help you when someone decides to troll you.

Previously, we have had stringent rules on the channel, however, experience shows that the community is rather self-moderating. More importantly, the ops actively avoid using /ban

If you have logs, etc to post, use https://linx.vtluug.org or https://linx.li

Speaking

In order to reduce spam, we currently require all IRC users to have their nicks registered with NickServ to be able to speak. You can register your chosen nick with

/msg nickserv register YourPassword your@email.address.com

and then you must identify on every login with

/msg nickserv identify YourPassword

you can make weechat do this automatically with

/set irc.server.oftc.command "/msg nickserv identify YourPassword"

Finally go to services.oftc.net to verify your account as not a bot.

History

Beginning in 2008, some folks began to idle on irc.freenode.net in #vtluug. In fall 2009, there were generally a dozen LUUG members, alumni and associates on at any given time.

On February 28, 2012, the approximately 30 members in the channel made the decision to migrate to irc.oftc.net due to persistent stability issues with Freenode and some issues that some members had with the staff. By 2014, there were as many as 40 to 50 students and others in the channel. Currently, there are often 20 to 30 LUUG members and alumni idling in the channel.

Rules

You will be kicked for an in progress flood only. There are no other rules. If you don't like somebody, use /ignore.

Recommendations

  • Don't set /away [1] in an obnoxious way.
  • Don't abuse the bots -- they will be told to ignore you
  • Don't piss off the OPs (they don't keep @ for a reason)
  • Wait around, if you have questions.
    • You'll probably be trolled first. Sorry.
  • NO WAREZ
