The Linux and Unix Users Group at Virginia Tech Wiki or VTLUUG Wiki is a wiki hosted and moderated by the Linux and Unix Users Group. Anyone can add to and edit it. Historically, the VTLUUG wiki has been most populated by howto articles such as the VT-Wireless article. However, there is an ongoing effort to fill the wiki with additional content of interest to the Virginia Tech community, such as historical and biographical articles.
Purpose
The goal of this wiki is to create and disseminate information that is relevant to the Virginia Tech community. Encouraged content include howto, historical, and biographical articles.
What the VTLUUG Wiki is Like
Wikipedia
Wikipedia is the premier libre encyclopedia. The VTLUUG Wiki strives to imitate its strengths and is powered by the same software. The VTLUUG Wiki is meant for articles of interest primarily to the Virginia Tech community. Articles that meet Wikipedia's notability standard are probably best written there and linked to from the VTLUUG Wiki. You can use redirection and interwiki linking to alert VTLUUG Wiki readers to a Wikipedia article's presence, i.e. #REDIRECT w:Wikipedia. For example, the history and activities of a national organization are best chronicled on Wikipedia, but the history and activities of a local chapter of a national organization are most fittingly written on the VTLUUG Wiki.
Virginia Tech Knowledge Base
The Virginia Tech Knowledge Base is copyright Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and generally has poor support for Free Software like Linux. The VTLUUG wiki is copyleft and aims to have excellent support for Free Software. Other than that, the technical content—primarily howtos—is quite similar.
What the VTLUUG Wiki is Not
Rate VT Teachers, Koofers
While writing biographical information about faculty, staff, and administrators is encouraged, individual evaluations and ratings are best left to sites like Rate VT Teachers and Koofers, or a suitable libre equivalent. If the licensing allows it, displaying the overall ratings for teachers from these sites or writing about the average response is helpful and recommended. If you really want to write a personal comment about a teacher, feel free to use the discussion page.
VTLUUG Namespace
Some articles that pertain mostly to the Linux and Unix Users Group, but not the greater Virginia Tech community, are kept in the VTLUUG namespace. An example is the VTLUUG Roadmap. If other organizations are interested in following suit, they are welcome. Note that Scholar also has wiki functionality which is better integrated with its other online tools, but has a more limited and lesser-known syntax.
