GNU/Linux and BSD Mirrors on Campus

Virginia Tech hosts mirrors for several distributions, including Ubuntu, Fedora, and Gentoo.

Campus Computing

Campus Computing (CC) mirrors are available at http://mirror.cc.vt.edu/ They host mirrors for Ubuntu, Gentoo, Fedora, OpenSUSE and a number of other more popular distributions Note: To access via RSYNC, leave out /pub/ from the URL.

VBI

The Virginia Bioinformatics Institute (VBI) mirrors most of these large distibutions as well. A list of VBI mirrors is at http://mirrors.vbi.vt.edu/.

Note: These servers tend to have good uptime and excellent transfer speeds.

CS

The Computer Science Department (CS) runs a relatively old machine that mirrors for a few smaller distributions of GNU/Linux, including Arch and Knoppix. The Arch mirror has now been updated so it has current packages. Their mirrors are available at http://mirror.cs.vt.edu/.

ECE

The Electrical and Computer Department mirror at http://mirror.ece.vt.edu/ is currently down, but will be coming under new management.

There are existing on campus mirrors for a lot of popular distributions, so while mirror.ece.vt.edu will host them it will focus on providing more unusual requests from the community. It currently is considering hosting the following (add more if you wish):

  • Ubuntu
  • Epel
  • Fedora
  • CentOS
  • Scientific Linux
  • OpenIndiana
  • OpenBSD
  • FreeBSD
  • NetBSD

VTTI

VTTI currently hosts a mirror for mostly internal use, with up-to-date Archlinux and a few other distros, and IPv6-accessable Ubuntu PPAs

Direct Links

Free Software Applications

Several Free Software applications are mirrored.

Firefox

Thunderbird

GNU/Linux Distributions

The installation disk images can be somewhat hard to find. Direct links to the current disk image folder for the following GNU/Linux distributions are provided for your convenience.

Arch

Fedora

Gentoo

openSUSE

Ubuntu

Sabayon

Package Manager Use

OpenBSD

To use the ECE mirror for the OpenBSD packages manager:

$ export PKG_PATH=http://mirror.ece.vt.edu/pub/OpenBSD/<version>/packages/`machine -a`/

where <version> is the version you are running. See OpenBSD FAQ section 15 for more information. Note that not all architectures with the install sets on the ECE mirror also have corresponding packages there.
