Virginia Tech currently runs a branded and presumably patched version of the Free Software [[w:Horde (software)|Horde Application Framework]]'s [[w:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Messaging_Program|IMP]] for webmail. The email services have been slow to upgrade, with IMAP being offered only recently.
Alumni email services are being outsourced to Google. If the transition goes well, student Student and faculty mail may followare scheduled to be moved beginning in fall 2011. The [[computer science departmentgp:Computer Science|Computer Science]] department has already reacted to this possibility by moving people to their own, in-house, @cs.vt.edu addresses.
