This page provides links on how to use both VT Gmail and VTLUUG acidburn email in various clients

VT Mailservers

Currently VT runs a very convoluted mail setup. Most students are now on Google Apps for Education, which means that Google mail servers forward mail back to the campus mailservers, which then forward it to its destination.

How to configure e-mail clients on Linux for VT Mail

Note: If you are experiencing problems setting up your account or checking your e-mail, refer to Common VT Mail Problems.

Status of Virginia Tech Email

Virginia Tech currently runs a branded and presumably patched version of the Free Software Horde Application Framework's IMP for webmail. The email services have been slow to upgrade, with IMAP being offered only recently. VT will eventually transition over to the Google Apps mail service.

Alumni email services are being outsourced to Google. Student and faculty mail are scheduled to be moved beginning in fall 2012. The Computer Science department has already reacted to this possibility by moving people to their own, in-house, @cs.vt.edu addresses.

Also, VT has recently had major email reputation issues. (citation to come)

Acidburn mail (luugmail)

Acidburn currently runs a fully functional mail server. Mutt is available on acidburn for reading email over ssh, and IMAP/SMTP are currently set up for use with other clients remotely.
