Status of Virginia Tech Email
Virginia Tech currently runs a branded and presumably patched version of the Free Software Horde Application Framework's IMP for webmail. The email services have been slow to upgrade, with IMAP being offered only recently.
Alumni email services are being outsourced to Google. If the transition goes well, student and faculty mail may follow. The computer science department has already reacted to this possibility by moving people to their own, in-house, @cs.vt.edu addresses.
