Using your Virginia Tech email through Gmail

Google's Gmail is an free alternative to Virginia Tech's WebMail with more features and virtually unlimited storage space.

Create a Gmail account

  1. If you have not yet done so, create a Gmail account.

Set up Forwarding for VT Mail

  1. Log into http://my.vt.edu
  2. Select the Personal Info tab.
  3. Click the Manage your Profile link.
  4. Beside E-mail and Forwarding, click the Edit link.
  5. Click the Enable Forwarding button.
  6. In the text box, type the Gmail address to which you want to forward your VT Mail.
  7. Click the OK button.
  8. To verify that the change was successful, a green message will be under "VT Mail Settings":

Successfully added forwarding to: [your Gmail address]

Use your Virginia Tech address in outgoing emails

  1. Log in to your Gmail account.
  2. Click Settings along the top of any page, and then select the Accounts tab.
  3. Click Add another email address in the Send mail as section.
  4. Enter your full name in the Name field, and your Virginia Tech email address in the Email address field.
  5. Click Next Step >> and then click Send Verification

    to complete the process. Gmail will send a verification message to your other email address to confirm that you'd like to add it to your Gmail account. You'll need to click the link in that message, or enter the confirmation code in the Accounts section of your Gmail account, to complete the process. Once you've verified that you'd like to add the address to your account, you can start sending messages using your custom 'From:' address.
