Technical Talks & General Discussion
- Open Source and Amateur Radio Satellites: The Virginia Tech Camera Experiment Aboard AMSAT FOX-1 - Jagged
In conjunction with the nonprofit Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation (AMSAT), students at The Hume Center at Virginia Tech are actively working on an imaging experiment payload for the FOX-1 LEO Cubesat. FOX-1 is a 10 centimeter cube with a targeted orbit of 600km. Virginia Tech is tasked with providing an experiment board which will product a 640x480 JPEG picture from orbit. The entire project is written with GPLv3 code, based on ChibiOS/RT RTOS on an STM32L151ZDT6 low-power ARM processor. Recently released from ITAR restrictions, this project is actively soliciting help to bring the project to completion. The hardware and software system architecture is discussed in this presentation, with a focus on the system software architecture. About the speaker: Mitch Davis (AKA "Jagged") is an Electrical Engineering graduate student with a BSEE and BSCpE from Virginia Tech, concentrating in the fields of communications and radar systems. His current work involves the realtime detection of wireless broadband systems in the presence of impulsive noise. Mitch is a licensed amateur radio operator, callsign WQ3C, and enjoys many different operating bands and modes. His previous work experience includes avionics and communications systems, industrial and hazardous environment computing systems, and commercial public safety communications.
