Linux and BSD Mirrors on Campus
Virginia Tech hosts mirrors for several distributions, including Ubuntu, Fedora, and Gentoo.
Campus Computing
Campus Computing (CC) mirrors are available at http://mirror.cc.vt.edu/ They host mirrors for Ubuntu, Gentoo, Fedora, OpenSUSE and a number of other more popular distributions Note: To access via RSYNC, leave out /pub/ from the URL.
VBI
The Virginia Bioinformatics Institute (VBI) mirrors most of these large distibutions as well. A list of VBI mirrors is at http://mirrors.vbi.vt.edu/.
Note: These servers tend to have good uptime and excellent transfer speeds.
CS
The Computer Science Department (CS) runs a relatively old machine that mirrors for a few smaller distributions of Linux, including Arch and Knoppix. Their mirrors are available at http://mirror.cs.vt.edu/.
ECE
The Electrical and Computer Engineering Department now has a machine that currently mirrors all of Arch linux, and is kept much more up to date than the CS mirror. Soon it'll have mirroring for Gentoo and Ubuntu as well: [1]
Direct Links
Free Software Applications
Several Free Software applications are mirrored.
Firefox
- Latest version (CC)
Thunderbird
- Latest version (CC)
Linux Distributions
The installation disk images can be somewhat hard to find. Direct links to the current disk image folder for the following Linux distributions are provided for your convenience.
Arch
- Latest (ECE)
- Server line: Server = http://cvlws02.ece.vt.edu/archlinux/$repo/os/$arch
- Updated every 4 hours
- 2009.08 (CS)
Fedora
- 11 (VBI)
Gentoo
- Current x86 ISO (CC)
openSUSE
Ubuntu
Sabayon
- All versions (CS)
Package Manager Use
- To set up Ubuntu sync apt-get with on-campus mirrors, see the Ubuntu distribution guide.
- To set up emerge on Gentoo to use on-campus mirrors, see the Gentoo distribution guide.
