Bgregos:

Wood was the primary server of the VTLUUG. It was built in late 2010 with hardware
selected by the Hardware Selection Task Force
and currently resides in the <s>CVL in Whittemore Hall</s>
uncurlhalo's house. The name "wood" was given to the server based on the
fact that until March 5th, 2011, it had no case and rested on a piece of plywood instead.

Wood is not currently in service due to the CVL eviction. Wood also has a tendency to short
whenever someone touches the case, meaning it may stay out of service permanently. This is due,
in part, to the horrible mounting and positioning in the case; the motherboard is a full
17" square, thus the PSU is mounted to nothing in the front of the case, along with the hard drives
and CD drive.

The hardware is listed below, in info about the HSTF. To upgrade to a full 4 processors would
cost about as much as 2 Raspberry Pis ,
and upgrading the RAM to 32 GiB or so would cost just a little more than
that .

echarlie has set aside a 4U enclosure no longer in use by WUVT for use for wood. This enclosure has a better mounting layout, and *might* not cause
Wood to short. It also has a power button.

Virtual machines
Wood hosts a number of virtual machines for the VTLUUG for various purposes.
became Wood.
We were generously allocated $800 in the fall of 2010 and $300 in the spring of 2011 by the Student Engineers' Council.

#vtluug on
irc.oftc.net
is the LUUG IRC channel. It is a public, relatively unmoderated forum for general banter, especially focusing on VTLUUG operations.
If you have questions about this wiki, any even we're having, or general *nix, it is the best place to ask them.

If you ask a question, please stick around for a while (several hours) after asking; just because no one can help you
now does not mean that no one will be able to help you later. Also look at ESR's
how to ask questions the smart way; it will help you when
someone decides to troll you.

Previously, we have had stringent rules on the channel, however, experience shows that the community is rather self-moderating. More importantly, the ops actively avoid using
/ban

Speaking
In order to reduce spam, we currently require all IRC users to have their nicks registered with NickServ to be able to speak. You can register your chosen nick with

/msg nickserv register YourPassword your@email.address.com

and then you must identify on every login with

/msg nickserv identify YourPassword

you can make weechat do this automatically with

History
Beginning in 2008, some folks began to idle on
irc.freenode.net
in
#vtluug
. In fall 2009, there were generally a dozen LUUG members, alumni and associates on at any given time.

On February 28, 2012, the approximately 30 members in the channel made the decision to migrate to
irc.oftc.net
due to persistent stability issues with Freenode and some issues that some members had with the staff. By 2014, there were as many as 40 to 50 students and others in the channel. Currently, there are often 20 to 30 LUUG members and alumni idling in the channel.

Rules
You will be kicked for an in progress flood only. There are no other rules. If you don't like somebody, use
/ignore
.
Setting up/idling in Weechat tutorial
If you want to get started idling in #VTLUUG, just do the following:
# <Optional> Find a linux box, up 24/7, for hosting weechat. Many VTLUUG members use acidburn for this purpose.
# Make sure weechat is installed. This step is done for you on acidburn.
# Log in via SSH. For those new to ssh, you can do this for acidburn by typing
ssh yourUsername@acidburn.vtluug.org
in your favorite terminal.
# Open a new tmux session. If you're new to tmux, read up on it here.
# Launch weechat. (NOTE ON NAVIGATION: You can change "tabs" in weechat by holding alt and pressing left or right arrow, or jump to a buffer by typing it's number while holding alt.
# Type
/server add oftc irc.oftc.net

# Type
/connect oftc</oftc>

# Type
/set irc.server.oftc.nicks "mynick,mynick2,mynick3,mynick4,mynick5"
. You only need one nickname, but you may put in more than one nick as shown.
# <Optional> Type
/set irc.server.oftc.username "My user name"
and
/set irc.server.oftc.realname "My real name"
to set other identifying info.
# <Optional> To connect automatically at startup:
/set irc.server.oftc.autoconnect on

# <Optional> To autojoin certain channels,
/set irc.server.freenode.autojoin "#channel1,#channel2"

# In order to reduce spam, we require all IRC users to have their nicks registered with NickServ to be able to speak. You can register your chosen nick with

/msg nickserv register YourPassword your@email.address.com

and then you must identify on every login with

/msg nickserv identify YourPassword

you can make weechat do this automatically with

/set irc.server.oftc.command "/msg nickserv identify YourPassword"
